Art Therapists in Houston
Last reviewed: October 2026
Art therapy uses drawing, painting, clay and other materials as part of therapy. It's not an art class, and you don't need any talent. It helps people work through feelings that are hard to put into words, which is why it's used a lot for trauma, grief, anxiety and with children.
One thing worth checking: "art therapist" is a specific credential. ATR means a registered art therapist and ATR-BC means board-certified. In Texas, many also hold a counseling license like an LPC. Below are 7 Houston practices with credentialed art therapists, plus one hospital program, in no particular order.
How we chose: practices in the Houston area whose own website has a dedicated art therapy page and names a credentialed art therapist (ATR or ATR-BC), plus hospital programs that offer art therapy to outpatients. No paid placements. Details come from each provider's website as of October 2026.

What to look for in an art therapist
- Check the credential. ATR or ATR-BC means formal art therapy training. Plenty of counselors use art, but that's not the same thing.
- Ask how sessions work. Some are mostly making art with reflection, others mix art and talk therapy.
- For kids, ask about parent involvement. Most child-focused practices include parents in some sessions.
- Online art therapy is possible. Several practices do it by video with materials you have at home.
FAQ
No. Art therapy is about the process, not the result. Most people who try it don't consider themselves artistic.
It's often used for trauma, grief, anxiety, depression and with children who find talking hard. It can also help adults who feel stuck in regular talk therapy.
It means the therapist is a board-certified art therapist, which requires a graduate degree in art therapy, supervised experience and a national exam.
Sometimes. When the art therapist is also a licensed counselor and takes your insurance, it's usually billed as psychotherapy. At least one practice on this page is in-network with several major insurers.
