Trauma and PTSD Therapists in Houston
Last reviewed: October 2026
Trauma can come from a single event, like an accident or assault, or from long-term experiences such as childhood abuse or an unsafe relationship. Either way, trauma-focused therapy can help, and several methods have strong research behind them: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), EMDR and trauma-focused CBT for children.
Below are 10 Houston options, including two free or low-cost programs, in no particular order.
How we chose: independent practices, university programs and nonprofits in the Houston area whose own website has a dedicated trauma or PTSD page, that describe their approach, and that look active. No paid placements. Details come from each provider's website as of October 2026.

What to look for in a trauma therapist
- Ask which trauma method they use. CPT, Prolonged Exposure, EMDR and TF-CBT (for kids) all have solid evidence. A trauma specialist should name one or more.
- Ask how they keep sessions safe. Good trauma therapy builds stability and coping skills before going into hard memories.
- Look for experience with your kind of trauma. Military, sexual assault, childhood abuse and medical trauma each have specialists.
- Know the free options. UTHealth's center and the Houston Area Women's Center offer care at reduced or no cost.
